IT SUCKS TO BE YOU! I say it sucka, sucka, sucka, sucka, suck- it sucks to be you! NO, I’m not high but I’m thrilled! Doesn’t it suck to be "us" sometimes?! Well, you and I are not alone. There’s a musical that we can relate to to that feeling and it’s called Avenue Q!
I couldn’t believe it. I was talking to my sis in London and out of the blue we were singing a song from "Avenue Q" and then she says that she heard that it is going to be staged in the Philippines soon!! I was like, "OMG, you’re kidding! are you sure? Really?!" Well, I am so excited and happy for you guys in Manila because you’ll have this chance of a lifetime! Like seriously, if you’ve never watched a broadway show or a musical in your entire life, and you have the opportunity to watch it- Egad, make it this show!!! I saw this musical last year in New York with all the original cast from when it started and what a blast!

Avenue q is a Broadway musical smash hit and winner of the 2004 Tony Awards for Best Musical. Incidentally, one of the two writers and the brain of the show, Robert Lopez is half-Filipino (his mom is!). It follows the life of a wide-eyed fresh out of college guy named Princeton in search for his purpose in life after graduation. He goes to New York to start his quest. He looks for apartments and starts at the upscale Avenue A until he goes further down his budget which leads him to Avenue Q. So Avenue Q is basically the name of the street he will now call home. Along the way, he meets interesting characters like Gary Coleman, the block’s Superintendent (yes from the hit show Different Strokes! but not the actual gary coleman of course!), the funny odd couple Brian (a comedian who doesn’t have a job!) and Christmas Eve (a japanese who worked in a Korean deli and pursues a career in Psychology and is now a therapist with no clients or "crients" as she would say it!); the roommates’ Rod (the closet gay) and Nicky (just a laid back guy and a good friend), Trekkie Monster (who is obssessed with porn!) and Kate Monster (a Kindergaten teacher who becomes the love of Princeton’s life)! Together, they find love, comfort and comedy in each other as they search for their purpose in life.

The success of this show could be attributed to a number of things: the richness of its characters, the simple storyline, the very well written, easy to remember lyrics, the catchy tunes, and its use of puppets as the main characters which in itself is very unique. The puppets mingling with humans! Mind you, this isn’t Sesame Street stuff! Although there are similarities and was actually inspired by it. In fact, the main puppeteer who created all the puppets for the show is the very same guy who created the puppets in Sesame Street, the creative Rick Lyon. He is among the original Broadway cast who handles Trekkie Monster and Nicky onstage. This is the adult version of Sesame Street because it deals with very adult subjects ranging from sex, porn, racism and homosexuality. Very sensitive and tough subject but put it into a musical? It’s hilarious and pure genius! Well, It may be offensive to some, even scandalous (!) but I think they are the ones who forgot to bring their sense of humor while at the theater and shouldn’t be watching comedic musicals at all in that case! Oh be forewarned, there will be puppet nudity and puppet making out!
Avenue Q should just be taken lightly and purely for its entertainment value. Still, the 18-35 age group could very well relate to it that they might just get something out of it like pursuing what they want in life! I know I got affected and fell so much in love with it! How can you not love a song like, "it sucks to be me?!" "Purpose, it’s that little flame that lights a fire under your ass!" or with lyrics like "…the more you love someone, the more you want to kill him, the more you love someone, the more you wishing him dead!" or how about something all the guys will agree: "the internet is for porn! grab your dick and double click for porn, porn, porn!" "how about "everyone’s a little bit racist sometimes, doesn’t mean you have to go around committing hate crimes!" Or "if you were gay, it will be ok because hey, i’d love you anyway!" How about the sweet "Sometimes when someone has a crush on you, they’ll make you a mix tape to give you a clue…!" Or "Fantasies come true!" Then there’s "You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want [When You're Making Love]" and this we all can relate- "Schadenfreude- happiness at the misfortune of others, making me feel glad i’m not you! ha!" "I wish I could go back to college, life was so simple then…" "…we gotta go after the things we love while we’re still in our prime, there’s a fine, fine line between love and a waste of time!" "Everyone’s a little bit unsatisfied for now…only for now!" Geez I’m telling you, you gotta love this show!!!
I highly recommend it to anybody who needs cheering up! All the songs are memorable and so infectious. The funny thing is I bought the CD soundtrack first and fell in love with the CD even way before I saw the actual show!! That’s how powerful the songs are. It still drives a heavy crowd in Broadway after three years of continuous playing and is now being enjoyed by the UK crowd where it had its west end debut in a London Theater last year! It also is a huge success there! I had my sister and her BF watch it in London and they too fell in love with the musical!! Now it’s having its Asian premier in the Philippines. Unbelievable! Heck, no matter how much the cost- go and watch it! If you don’t enjoy or smile or even chuckle one bit, send me the bill and I’ll refund your money!! It’s that excellent! I don’t know how much it will fare though with the Asian cast from the original but I read that Rachel Alejandro is going to be on it! She’ll be playing Kate monster, no doubt! And Aiza Seguerra is on it?!! Hmmm, I don’t know who she’ll be playing! I’m very interested to know how they will all play it out. Are they going to change the setting? Do it exactly as the Broadway show? Alter some lines to fit the Filipino taste? Are they going to be as good as the original?! Oh, I wish I can see it!!!
You’ll be singing the songs long after you’re out of the theater and I guarantee you’ll want to grab the CD to sing along with it to your heart’s content! I know I did and I now memorize almost all the lines from it! I must have played it over a hundred times now on my ipod since I first bought the Cd and I still play it! It is my comfort theme when I’m down or stressed!! It never fails to put a smile back on my face. Grab a CD today and enjoy!
If you are in New York or London, watch it on broadway and the west end and have the best time of your life! Don’t miss the opportunity to watch it in the Philippines! You don’t get to see acclaimed broadway shows too often in a Manila Production. Go see it and let me know how it went!
Meanwhile, you can go to youtube and check out Avenue q!
Lastly, let me share the lyrics of one of my fave songs on the show, "There’s a Fine, Fine Line, sang by Kate Monster:
There’s a fine, fine line between a lover and a friend;
There’s a fine, fine line between reality and pretend;
And you never know ’til you reach the top if it was worth the uphill climb.
There’s a fine, fine line between love
And a waste of time.
There’s a fine, fine line between a fairy tale and a lie;
And there’s a fine, fine line between "You’re wonderful" and "Goodbye."
I guess if someone doesn’t love you back it isn’t such a crime,
But there’s a fine, fine line between love
And a waste of your time.
And I don’t have the time to waste on you anymore.
I don’t think that you even know what you’re looking for.
For my own sanity, I’ve got to close the door
And walk away…
Oh…
There’s a fine, fine line between together and not
And there’s a fine, fine line between what you wanted and what you got.
You gotta go after the things you want while you’re still in your prime…
There’s a fine, fine line between love
And a waste of time.
