The Worst Tragedy Is…

082905_katrina18

I WAS STUNNED by the recent tragedy that 082905_katrina16_4befell New Orleans and its neighboring cities because of Hurricane Katrina. Seeing distraught people by the thousands displaced with no home, food, clothing, money and livelihood was disheartening. Talk about your whole life crashing in front of you. Still, hundreds are missing and or believed dead while 200 have actually been confirmed dead and counting. The scenes are shocking as it is dreadful.

So nature has spoken and has shown its wrath. Even the most powerful and civilized country in the world wasn’t spared. As the rest of the world watches how its government is handling the situation and how ordinary Joe’s and Jane’s react to the disaster, reality has sank in for those affected.

082905_katrina12_2 The way I see it, media has again won in this situation. They made their own government look really inept and unprepared overall and portrayed the calamity as a huge catastrophe the world has ever seen.

Yes, it was sooo bad and devastating. Well, America needs only to look 082905_katrina15_2at what’s going on around the world to know that theirs wasn’t the worst and it didn’t only happen to them. Of recent, Asia had just Tsunami. They’re still trying to recover from that disaster. The Philippines alone suffer year after year of typhoon and storms. Hundreds die, thousands are left hungry, angry and homeless. The saddest thing here is that help is hard to come by or none at all.

True, the US government may have reacted a little late. Bush is already carrying that along with a low approval rating and hard criticisms from the democrats. But the people of New Orleans has the US government and all other non-profit organizations backing on them. There will be help for these people. They will get welfare until they’re able to stand and recover on their own. As of this writing, the government are currently distributing debit cards with $2,000 money on it for EACH household affected as starter. The US Congress has already approved an additional $51.8 billion relief and recovery on top of the initial $10.5 billion already provided. Third world countries aren’t that lucky.

Storm or no storm- life is a living hell for most of our people in the Philippines. Typhoon or no typhoon- to be alive and to battle basic survival is a daily struggle for poor countries of the world. I think that’s the most devastating reality of all. And indifference and apathy- the worst tragedy of all to hit mankind.
